Higher Ground Retreat
Camp for All, Burton, Texas
Traumatic Brain Injury Camp
Saturday, May 1, 2010

The Anchor Club of La Grange again participated in Higher Ground Retreat on May 1, 2010 at the wonderful Camp for All facility in Burton, Texas.  The retreat is intended to be a weekend of fun and fellowship for adults who have suffered a traumatic brain injury.  A number of the Texas District Pilots and Anchors participate and give of their time and service from the heart during this weekend.  It is also a very rewarding weekend for those Anchors and Pilots!

Several of the La Grange Anchors and their advisor, Mrs. Rainosek, led an activity session for the campers in the afternoon called “Cooking for Fun”.  Kick the Can ice cream using coffee cans filled with ice cream mixture and ice was one of the food items that the participants prepared.  The campers helped prepare the Chocolate and vanilla ice cream by rolling the cans between them until the mixture was frozen and set. The confection, Friendship Fudge, was also a treat that the campers prepared and enjoyed.  The session was topped off with a trail mix that the campers were able to mix.

The campers absolutely love the cooking session!  Besides providing them a chance to exercise their hands and arms (most were in wheelchairs) by rolling the ice cream filled cans and working the zip lock bags with the ingredients for the fudge in them, campers and volunteers alike had a chance to have some fun and quality conversation, one on one.  Several of the campers had really sharp and funny personalities, and could pick on and kid the Anchors.

The Higher Ground Retreat project is a joint service project for Anchors and Pilots.  Pilots cover the expense of the Cooking for Fun session and the majority of the volunteers for the project are Anchors and their Advisor, Mrs. Rainosek. Going to Higher Ground Retreat has become one of the La Grange Anchor Club’s favorite projects.  The quality time spent with campers is a sobering reminder of the truly devastating effects of a traumatic brain injury.  This project is one that makes a very definite and lasting impression.
